How do I verify a permit for an ADU?
The Department of Planning and Permitting provides a website for agents to search for building permits issued after January 1972 (Honolulu Internet Permit System - Building Permit Search).
Information for permits issued prior to this date can be obtained by visiting their Data Access and Imaging Branch on the first floor of the Fasi Municipal Building (FMB).
** Please Note: **
The quickest way to find a building permit is by entering the Application Number or the Building Permit Number.
Verifying ADU information provided on a listing:
1. If verifying permit information from Matrix, enter the ADU permit number into the "Building Permit No" field on the DPP website
2. If permit has been completed, you will see a date in the "Job Completed Date" and the "Date Construction Completed" fields
3. Under the "Type of Work"field, you will see "Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)"checked off
Searching for ADU information in preparation for listing:
1. If searching for permit information on a property, go to the City and County DPP website and search for your property. If there is no previous history of ADU permit information, you may need to use address or TMK # to search for a permit.
2. You will see a column for “Application Number.” The goal is to identify the “Building Permit #” and the date of final completion. Make sure to find the permit number that directly addresses the ADU (this does not include pool room or rec room additions).
3. Open the permit information to review the necessary information and verify the "Date of Final Completion"
4. There are additional tabs to review for additional information - "Approvals, Applicant/Contractors, Plan Reviews and Inspections"
What these tabs show:
-
- Approvals - Shows the different City departments that would need to approve this permit. For this example, the WWB (Waste Water Branch) and the BWS (Board of Water Supply), due to an increase in the number of bathrooms, the approval is needed for the additional capacity to the sewer system.
- Applicant/Contractors - Identifies who pulled the permit, the name of the General Contractor, Sub Contractors, and Plan Maker
- Plan Reviews - Outlines the timeline and flow of the progress review
- Inspections - Most important piece to note that this permit application process has been fully completed and signed off by the different inspections needed.
- Approvals - Shows the different City departments that would need to approve this permit. For this example, the WWB (Waste Water Branch) and the BWS (Board of Water Supply), due to an increase in the number of bathrooms, the approval is needed for the additional capacity to the sewer system.
